DOROTHY VIVIAN HANNU, age 91 of Grand Rapids, MN, died Sunday, July 15, 2012 in Grand Rapids. Dorothy was born in 1921 to William and Ina Mattson in Duluth, MN. She grew up and attended schools in Floodwood, then achieved a B.S. from University of Minnesota, Duluth. She was united in marriage to Roy Leonard Hannu on February 13, 1944 in Floodwood, MN. Dorothy was an elementary and special education teacher for School District #318 for 31 years and following her retirement, she traveled extensively throughout the world. Dorothy was a very active member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, where she served on various committees, including: Zion Women, Zion Education Committee (chairman), Vacation Bible School Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent, Library Committee, Senior Ministry, Memorial Committee and Youth Committee Advisor (1962 – 1965). Her community involvement included: Charter member of the Grand Rapids Federation of Teachers; Alpha Delta Kappa, Teachers Honorary Sorority- ETA Chapter; and REAM, Retired Educators of Minnesota.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband Roy; and half brother, Leonard Mattson.
Dorothy is survived by four children: Marvin Hannu of Grand Rapids, MN, Paul Hannu of Duluth, MN, Kathryn (David) Clusiau of Pengilly, MN and Mary Jo (Rick) Bruner of Topeka, KS; one brother, Harry (Carmen) Mattson of Foster City, CA; Grandchildren, Roy (Bridget) Hannu, Patrick Hannu, Kellie (Pete) Wohlers, Christopher Clusiau and Sada (Kevin) Brickson; Great-Grandchildren, Skyler, Emma, Cassie, Jaiden, Daniel, David and Zach.
Visitation with the family will be Thursday, July 19th from 10:00 am until the 11:00 am Memorial Service at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Grand Rapids, MN. Rev. Paul Leslie will officiate. Inurnment will be in Zion Lutheran Columbarium immediately following the memorial service.
